What needs to happen (3 Viewers)

The idea that the team 8 points clear at the top of the league "needs" to bring in four or more players to get through the season just doesn't hold water to me.

The team that started today still has three of the season's best performers (BTA, Torp and Dasilva) yet still to return. It has two of last season's best players (Wright and Rudoni) going through a grim run of form which is not likely to continue at current levels. The squad is lacking proper backup options out wide and could arguably do with some more competition up front, but with 21 games left you can trust this squad to finish the job without needing a major overhaul - that comes in the summer instead.

The major overhaul comes in the summer, but its clinical madness to deny that this team needs help.

Hence the bit where I said we need more options out wide and maybe up front

The idea that we should be spending money on, for example, a Matty Grimes backup right now is mad though

What the owners only role for you is can we afford it or not, regardless of what you’re getting for it? mental take for me

Manager picks the team. Anything else is a mental take for me. No I don’t rate Douglas Ming rapeseed oil magnate and newly minted football supporters opinion over Frank Lampard of Chelsea and England fame and if I did I wouldn’t need Lampard.

You pay the manager to manage. If you want to pick the team hire yourself as manager.

Love posts like this that claim 4 players is madness unlike their totally sensible suggestion of 3. Can’t make that shit up.

Wish I could feel comfortable with what opta thinks. With only about 55% of the season played. There’s no absolute guarantee we find a form good enough to finish the job.

Funnily enough, individual signings can sometimes offer you options in multiple positions on the pitch.

I'm hoping for one statement signing who can play on either wing and/or up front, and one short-term option to plug whatever gap's most pressing after that.

And what’s your plan for a game like today? Stick a giant mirror in the middle of the pitch and hope they don’t notice you’re only playing one winger.

I really do appreciate the commitment to the bit though. Especially the Comical Ali levels it’s starting to reach now.

Not if he is on the reported £35k a week at Sheff U.
35K a week is less than £1M for a 6 month loan. Its' peanuts in comparison to the potential reward.

If he'd scored 5 in 9 for us over the same period as his Sheff Utd loan we would:

a} have a few more points than we have now.
b} not be in a flat panic on this board.

Not sure how many more times I have to point out that I do actually think we should sign another winger so we don't have to fuck around with the formation like we did today.

It's the nonsense like "let's buy a fourth LB in case Dasilva gets sent off again" or "let's sign a backup option to World's Most Durable Man Matty Grimes" that doesn't make sense to me. Especially when you're a 95% shout for promotion in 21 games.

If you want to sign someone just so we can occasionally drop Matty Grimes over the next 21 games then be my guest. This is the guy who's missed about four league games in seven years btw.

Personally I would rather only have one player to upgrade on in the summer than two.

I want someone who can cover him if hes blowing yes.

We will be doing huge surgery in the summer regardless, whats one more.

JDS will be back for Birmingham, what is this demand for a LB to replace a player who has been brilliant all season.

Edit: Various fans are demanding a LB, bit think it’s based on Bidwell and Brau being not at the level of JDS

It's clearly both our backup options to cover Dasilva can't just slot in and take his spot. It's too disruptive. Bidwell is past his prime and was never an attacking threat... and Brau... Well let's be kind and call him a wingback.

The drop off is far to jarring when Jay is out. If we need funds for elsewhere It would be so cheap and easy to get a loan player in that has a comparable style to Dasilva.

I don't know why we wouldn't. Are people worried about fringe players feelings? Worried to spend a small amount of Doug's cash? It's a far bigger risk and potential loss of earnings if we leave ourselves short key cover. Brau can go out on loan and Bidwell has been a decent servant but he isn't what we need right now.

The owner gives the budget…but would also say whether a contract would be a good deal or not.

Are you saying you would want a manager deciding, negotiating, and signing off on all contracts and deals? Here’s £50m frank feel free to spend it all on one player or 50 players your choice completely

Sometimes you don’t even believe your own nonsense i swear

Grimes has looked tired as hell last two games mate and we will have some more games coming up where it would be more helpful to play 2 x Matt Grimes’s. Unfortunately, we only have one.

The world’s most durable man has looked very leggy in recent weeks with a clear impact on our overall play and strength in midfield.

Truth be told I’ll be fucked off if we don’t get any additions through the door this week. The lineup that was fielded against Charlton was frankly a disgrace for a side trying to stay at the top and was a consequence of starting the season with such a thin squad. If Doug waits until the end of the transfer window how many more games can we expect to play a backwards squad with a shit bench because of illness and injuries.

If you’re being realistic / sensible no one “waits” until the end of the window, it’s just very difficult to get deals done for quality players, within a strict wage structure. I think / hope we get two quality additions as a minimum. Anymore I would see as a bonus.

I understand we don’t have the same pull and money as clubs in the premier league, but there’s multiple clubs in the top flight that have signings on the horizon one day into the window. I see no reason why we can’t be the same.

I’ll also say that if we want to stay as automatic contenders, we NEED two quality additions as an absolute minimum

I think people underestimate what it means to have a vaguely sensible wage structure and how many other teams are looking at the same good quality players as us.

Our main pull will be Lampard and league position / promotion aspirations.

We have to sell that project to players, because I highly doubt we’ll be matching some of the other wage offers by other clubs.

Agree. Realistically unless they are superstar signings they aren’t going to be starting until February - the more pressing issue is to get the same players who dominated the league playing anything like the form they showed from September to November. Extra players is sticking plasters.

If plasters get us over the line then so be it

Extra players is absolutely not sticking plasters. Saying that is implying it’s a temporary fix to the problem which it’s not.

The problem is our squad is way too thin, which a lot of us said at the start of the season and now we are seeing the consequences. The only fix to that is adding more quality players.

The same players who dominated the league from September to November can’t do much from the stands with inevitable injuries/ illness.

Do people honestly think we're going to sign a second version of Matt Grimes this window?
