Has their been many players that have pulled around so many fans opinions of him than BTA

While never that good, Bakayoko received the worst abuse I've ever heard in his first few games. Within months he was well loved. The Charlton game changed everything.

Let’s cut to the chase. The levels we’re seeing from BTA this season is immense. The guy is playing some of the best football of his career.

Also today rewarded with a call up to the Ghana squad.

Can't argue with his output - think he is better on the wing than at striker as he avoids the constant battle with the centre backs

We're really lucky Ghana didn't qualify for AFCON as he'd be missing for 3-5 games. Looks like they're going to qualify for the World Cup though - so we've potentially got 2 players going

Edit: 3 players - Jamaica are top of their group

He was tripe to be fair - I think fans were pretty kind to him. He’s now 29 released from every club he was at and now is in Japans 2nd division

Yes i think he was more of a cult figure who people took a shining too. We were on an upward curve at the time so people have more time for likeable, pretty rubbish players than they do when the team in general is performing poorly.

Bakayoko was a donkey. Can’t believe we extended his contract. We were poor as fuck back then and cause we’d spent money on him we didn’t want to let him go for free but extended the pain of having him.

Every player has one good game, Charlton was his.

The whole 20 goals was the biggest mockery of a player who never had the ability in his lifetime to score 20 goals in a season

He wasn't a donkey. Technically he was quite good, and fast, but he didn't like the physical battle and seemed to disappear in games. Didn't have the hunger to be a CF

Me too.

I guess he will be on the bench but if he gets some game time on Wednesday and/or Sunday and plays as well as he has been doing for us then he could cement a place in the World Cup squad.

I’m pleased for him. He deserves it.
I just saw that AFCON is over Christmas/New Year in a few months. If he keeps performing, he’ll get called up and we lose him over a busy spell.

I specifically remember Bakayoko getting booed onto the pitch one game in the very early days of his spell

Biamou was also called every name under the sun before he scored his first goal (which took him half a year to get) and he left relatively well thought of

I remember him coming on (Plymouth?), taking a penalty and scoring... just! Won 1-0?

I do think the levels would have been even worse, had that been missed.

Dasilva is another one. I'd have let him go at the start of last season, and now he's first choice left back by quite some distance.

The Simms and Wright threads on here are both emotional roller coasters as well, Wright in particular.
Some were happy to send him back to Turkey when rumours surfaced in his initial season, and then he hits 20 goals and is loved, and then some wanted him gone after the play offs at the end of last year and now he's back to one of the best strikers in the league.

I noticed from later posts that Ghana didn’t qualify, which surprised me.

It could possibly have been a double-edged sword for us if they had. On the one hand we would lose him for several games, with an increased risk of injury and exhaustion. On the other it would have given him an added incentive to keep up his run of good form.

He has always given his all for the team and I’m delighted to see him playing well.

Being selfish I wouldn’t want to let any player go on international duty during the season, but it’s a great opportunity and privilege to represent your country.

I wish him every success. He just seems like a decent, likeable bloke who loves playing football, and who gives it absolutely everything.

I've noticed more than once that even opposition players seem to be able to have a laugh and a joke with him. That's pretty rare these days, and I think speaks to his character. It obviously doesn't detract from his will to win!

Not all mate. It still amazes me how fans can just give up on our own players. Da Silva has received similar and look at his levels at the moment. Let’s hope we can add Simms to the list by the end of the season.

So pleased for BTA, he seems such a happy, likeable guy too.
This

Still amazes me how happy people are to write off our players. He clearly had great work rate, good attitude, and plenty of good technical attributes but missed a few sitters and many just assume he is useless as a result

Bakayoko may have been a donkey but he was our donkey. He was with us when we didn't have a pot to piss in and helped us to where we are now.

Some people seem to have forgotten how bad things got. If a player was worth a quid we sold them for 50p so we could buy a light bulb. Those without the ability but gave 100% are just as important as those who grew with us on our climb back up the football league.

Can add Biamou to that list, and he chipped in with some important goals in the first season at this level with some stunning ones lower down.

Its what happens when you are desperate fanbase in dire times looking for anything good to cling to, so that we can justify our madness at following our club to places like Morecambe.
