A clear second yellow for what was a nasty tackle.

Let them get away with all the theatrics. It was genuinely funny how desperate Ayling was for us to get a sending off. At one stage I thought it was working and the ref was going to comply.

I haven't seen the Bassette challenge yet but from the stands it looked fucking awful.

very frustrating, and blatantly obvious what they were doing. It’s becoming more and more frequent too. Needs to be stamped out by the authorities, perhaps by not allowing the rest of the team to congregate around the manager when the keeper goes down.

When a keeper goes down for apparently no reason when their teams under the cosh, the ref should get all the players from the team to stand in the centre circle before the medics are allowed on. Would stop the whole bullshit of a tactical injury in its tracks. To me it seems the only way to stop the blatant cheating, with guarantying the safety of the players.

Look at the protocol about head injured and the no of players who go down pretending they have a head injury, so the ref is obliged to stop play. Or pretending they are injured while thumping the pitch with their fist.A lot of laws are bought in to try and deal with this but managers and players always find a way to exploit these rules.

Another option would be, if a player goes down for a none serious injury (a tactical injury) the 4th official makes the manager sit back down in the dug out and makes sure no players are allowed to converse with him. Would solve the whole problem, and I'm sure it would stop within a matter of games.

This was all Man U esq ….. a second yellow & then how long did it take the player to finally walk off , with half the team arguing with the ref & the others having a go at the linesman ?

As Nick said on the match thread, stop players going to the touchline for a briefing with the manager.
You could go as far as to say the manager has to return to the dugout when the physio is on the pitch

The best solution when the keeper goes down like that is for the ref to say get off the pitch to receive treatment as they are near enough the touchline and the game continues. It would stop over night

Yeah on radio they kept saying there is nothing you can do to stop it

telling manager /coaches they will be sent off touchline if they speak to Amy players is one option. Making players stand apart so can’t speak to each other is another, or on far side of pitch from benches

Whilst watching it, I thought one option could have been for the players to all go and congregate on the touchline right in front of the Boro technical area. Basically so it would have been almost impossible for Carrick and the coaches to speak to their players - a barrier of sorts. Surely no rule against that if they're still on the pitch.

Not so keen though on the comment made by the CWR commentary team that this was a kind of unofficial time out, and that there was some kind of inevitablity that time outs would be introduced into football sometime in the future.

He was saying it was a tactic their manager uses when needed. He gets word to keeper who sits down, team then know that is the signal to run to manager for new instructions.

It’s crept in along with generally feigning injury again to break up play and waste time. Refs seem to be stopping play for outfield non head “injuries” all of a sudden too. All this briefly dropped right off when they stuck the actual proper added time on for a portion of last season. But that stopped and the theatrics made a swift return. So there is a deterrent if they can be arsed to use it. Can only assume a few top end premier managers/clubs moaned about the extra minutes and the FA bent over.

There is a law against unsporting behaviour which pretending to be injured certainly is. The solution to me is to call their bluff and treat the keeper as any other 'injured' player by making him go off the pitch for a while before coming back on.

I think it's harsh to blame it on the referee, there are no rules to prevent players from congregating on the touchline during stoppages, and is pretty much forced by convention to stop play to allow the physio to assess and treat the player for injury.

I think introducing a rule to prevent the congregating of players on the touchline during stoppages involving physios treating keepers is possible.

Anyone have a problem with that needs reminding that these stoppages are to assess players for injury. Football doesn't have designated and intentional stoppages for tactical discussions.
