Think we’re going to see a lot more use of subs anyway and he can get on in so many positions even if he doesn’t start I think we’ll see a lot of him.

Ayari will push him down the order and COH will push him way down.
A shame because Saka is capable of beating a player and disrupting defences.
I get the feeling MR has made up his mind. And he’s a stubborn bloke.

Yeah agree. Think robins was kind of alluding in his interview he couldn’t take MVE due to the job he was doing on Clarke, hence probably why Saka didn’t come on.

Shame he didn’t come on as I thought he was almost brilliant vs Swansea.
That's to say he looked like, when in full flow, would create loads - in fact would’ve done had Wright not miss controlled his pass/he hadn’t hit his through ball to Wright too hard.

Still feel like Robins doesn’t really know what to do with him. Seems a bit of an odd signing as not convinced he really fits our system, looks like and out and out winger to me

I agree he’s more of a winger. He should be tried there in an overwhelming attacking role and see how much he messes up a defence and gives the likes of Simms chances in the box.

He’s a wingback who can fill in at AM. I think he’ll manage.
I like the look of what I’ve seen of him so far, but I think he’s in danger of becoming a kind of wild card/utility player, who will come on and work hard when we need to plug a gap, but isn’t given the chance to excel in his chosen position. And that probably isn’t going to happen without a change of formation.

Sakamoto will fill in at WB or in the AM slot in the box.
He played well against Swansea, but what we needed was someone to link the strikers and midfield. We moved the ball better yesterday with Palmer and Ayari than we did with Sakamoto. Sakamoto did well in the wide spaces and dribbling the ball but couldn’t link up with the passing.
Sakamoto is new to England and will need time to adapt. It’s a long season.

Robins like to switch up wingbacks. I think we didn’t see him against Sunderland because Clarke was playing and robins wanted MvEs pace.
And he’ll do fine at this, but I don’t think we’ll be seeing the best of him if we only see him as a backup option playing out of his natural position.

I don’t see any evidence he likes to switch up wingbacks after his recent signings. Sakamoto has been cover for Palmer. That opportunity is going.

Sakamoto has played more at wingback than AM. He came in for Palmer last minute when we had no AMs. We then went and loaned an AM. The evidence really doesn’t support this theory.
I thought he was a winger?
In his own words: “My preferred position is that of right wing attacker. But I can also play perfectly on the left. My qualities lie mainly in the attacking compartment.”
I promise I’m not doing the ‘wing backs aren’t midfielders’ thing but in his own mind at least, he prefers to play in a position that doesn’t have any real defensive responsibilities.

He’s been brought in to play wide is my point. Whether that’s in a three in attack in a 343 or as a wingback. He’s at his best wide. I think he’s there to provide an option off the bench on either side. I also think robins has some plan with wide AMs as he was on about getting an AML (which I think Ayari is/can be?).

He has this obsession he’s a wing back however, even in Robins first interview he said “He is a versatile and creative attacking midfielder”. He’s now doing everything possible to shoehorn that to mean wing back. I don’t know why he wouldn’t just say “wing back” if that’s where Robins had brought him in for. He can clearly fill in there (versatile) but we didn’t sign him as a wing back

No doubt he has, but what I’m saying is that the positions we’re asking him to play don’t make the full use of his skill set. I have no doubt he’ll work hard there regardless, but it’s an unusual way to make use of a clearly talented player.

You are what you do, Eccles was mostly a RWB as he couldn’t get in at CM starting out as a young player. It’s not unusually for young midfielders to play out wide at first.
Saka has only played at AM when we’ve had no other options, and we just signed an AM who got on ahead of him yesterday.
Id be willing to bet Sakamoto plays wingback more than AM this season.

That wouldn’t necessarily surprise me as Jodi Jones played most his games in his last season with us as a wing back. He’s not a wing back though. In the nichest bet of all time, I’d be willing to bet if MVE gets injured, Eccles (not a RWB) plays RWB before Tatsu. He will be used in that position when chasing a game, not against strong opposition or seeing out a result, because he’s not a right wing back. Unless we go four at the back (not going to happen) he doesn’t really have a position in the team.

I still think Robins will try wider AMs or even a 4231 at some point. I get a feeling he’s got another formation he wants to try once everyone’s in. Possibly not all the time but as an option when chasing or against certain teams at home.
