Bigger Clubs making a lot of Noise - Meeting 9.30am start (1 Viewer)

Looks like a bit of a break away in league one led by Darragh MacAnthony Peterborough chairman – Six clubs Oxford - Sunderland- Fleetwood- Ipswich- Portsmouth & Peterborough have already got together and voted that the season gets finished before the meeting starts (9.30am this morning) 5 out of these 6 clubs are the bigger clubs in our league and feel they have a voice – It seems they are saying there should be is no time limit and dates but basically their case is that when it is safe to do so which technically could be next year – What they do forget 1400 players in league 1 & 2 are out of contract end of June –This idea seems a non – starter as half the clubs in league 1 & 2 might be out of business before these games are concluded

To pacify some of these loud noise clubs It might be that
(1) The season maybe concluded behind closed doors as long as training starts on May 25th – (cannot see this)

(2) The top 8/10 might well have a competition for promotion

(3) Top 2 go up and say the final 8 below have a short competition for the final promotion spot

(4) Season Null and void nobody up or down

Not so sure bigger clubs in League One can generate much noise at all, to be honest.

They are League One clubs. We are not talking about Man U and Chelsea and Liverpool here.

Oxford, Peterborough, Fleetwood? I bet the EFL are quaking in their boots.

And besides, if we are talking bigger clubs, Rotherham and the City have to be included in that too.

Like you say, it would be a farce to continue this season next year. It would be like all starting over with new teams.

I bloody hope Fleetwood go up, one in the eye for the “big” clubs

Fleetwood? Peterborough? Complete non-entities, their voice is no bigger than anybody else in the league

10:08 - Potential PlayOffs!
The EFL have confirmed that even if the L1 and L2 season is decided via PPG or weighted PPG, they still want to do the play offs in each league to decide the final promotion spot!
Games would be behind closed doors and potentially at neutral grounds!

10:15 - KNOCK ON EFFECT!
Another thing to take into consideration is the 2020/2021 season! The start date is unlikely to be August as scheduled and it remains to be seen whether any of the cup competitions are postponed for that season!

It's the only logical way forward to appease MacAnthony and his disciples.

Just get the teams to vote on this and be done with it.

Where is this information coming from, @AFCCOVENTRY?

I think the only scenario that would pass a vote is finish the season on PPG. Top two go up and 3-6 take part in behind closed doors playoffs. The teams in the playoffs I assume would be willing to pay the extensive costs of testing for the chance of promotion. Other than the 3 relegated teams and 1/2 who fall just out of the play offs, I believe everyone would be happy with this.

Understand the estimated figure for COVID-19 testing per club will be around £140,000.

That is a huge amount for most clubs, especially with very limited income.

Sure, some clubs in L1 and L2 can afford it, but it isn’t fair to force others to when they can’t.

Weird that the numbers for Championship are just over the £210K mark and L1 is £140K. What's the reason for this?

If they have the playoffs with PPG surely those lot can’t complain?

Some clubs at the bottom end will certainly complain. E.g. Southend and Tranmere. Ultimately the final decision won't suit all parties though so the EFL need to grab their balls.

The EFL should just make the decision themselves rather than pissing about

That's exactly what will happen if the clubs don't come to an agreement.

Get the Champagne ready .

Straight majority next meeting isn’t it ?

But if the next meeting only requires a majority, why bother making it 75% for that one? Why not set a time limit today and then put the 51% rule in for the final vote rather than coming back?

How many votes will there have to be to put the breaks on the season being voided?

If you read the EFL statement void is not an option.

In the event of a curtailment of the season, the EFL Board outlined how this could be addressed through a framework that includes maintaining the principle of promotion and relegation, league tables to be determined via unweighted points per game (PPG) and Play-Offs to remain in every division to determine the final promotion place.

The issue is ultimately money. There is 3-4 times income in the Championship compared with League One and that's a massive payday to some of the smaller teams. If 3rd-6th was clear then I suspect the matter would have been put to bed today.

If it was down to me, I would have relegation for Bolton and Southend. A playoff for Wimbledon Vs Tranmere, Wimbledon with home advantage and a draw being enough to keep them up (they actually had Tranmere to play at home as well).

Finally the playoffs I would have 3rd play the winner of 6v7, and 4th play the winner of 5v8. Same number of games overall. Just one leg.

I am fairly confident now that L2 has concluded as it has that we will be going up as Champions.

To combat the suggestion that teams could manoeuvre into play-offs, just have an 8 team knockout tournament. 3rd to 10th - QF, SF and Final. Neutral venues - one tie only.

not a bad shout, but you would then have the same issue with Ipswich and Gillingham over 10th place and very close on PPG.

There is a clear top 8 that have more PPG than the rest of the league. A 6 team play off would give a slight edge to 3rd and 4th whilst still giving a shot to 7 & 8....

Not really, Fleetwood are another in an artificially high position on account of a wealthy benefactor. It's one in the eye for clubs attempting to live within their means.

A bit like Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Leicester and Blackburn over the years then ??

Not really sure I’d include Liverpool and Man Utd in that list ,
But you can definitely stick Chelsea and Bournemouth in there.

Man United did their fair share of breaking the British transfer record and helped build the big wage culture.
