The selling of Sam McCallum has once again raised the question of Sisu selling our best assets and hence hampering the clubs ambition. In these troubled times it is perhaps understandable why Sisu agreed to Sams departure. There will be some of you that will say they have brought this on by moving us from the Ricoh, others will say they had no choice but to move us away from the Ricoh.
As a consequence of the move, revenue is undoubtedly down and monies have to be found from somewhere and the easiest way is to sell your assets. CCFC have no assets they can sell other than Ryton or players. I am not sure how far the Ryton proposed development has got . So in my mind this just leaves player sales to supplement the income. But is this new to CCFC, I think not. For as long as I can remember CCFC have always sold their best players and in reality they are no different to most of the clubs in the EFL or the make weight teams in the Premier League. There are very few clubs who can turn down offers from the top clubs.
The key to it is selling a player and having a replacement ready to step in. Unfortunately this is not always possible or the replacement does not come off.
I am just too young to actually remember George Hudson being sold to Northampton but I know it caused a lot of controversy. Below is a number of players names who I think were sold against the fans wishes( not all the fans will have felt like I did when these were sold). No doubt there will be others I have not recalled :
George Hudson, Bobby Gould, John Tudor, Ronnie Rees, George Curtis, Willie Carr, Dennis Mortimer, Gary Gillespie, Gary Thompson, Stuart Pearce, Danny Thomas, Ian Wallace, Mick Ferguson, Robbie Keane, Callum Wilson, Keiran Westward, Scott Dan, Danny Fox, James Maddison, Marc McNulty, Tom Baylis and Sam McCallum.
The above list is nowhere near complete, please feel free to add/delete/agree/disagree

we've always done it, as have most clubs.
Leicester won the league but many of the stars of that team left when bigger clubs came calling.

It's the circle of life in football. We're absolutely no different to every club in the English leagues, bar maybe Man City. If a bigger club comes calling for your player where that player can increase their wages, playing in 'better' leagues, then it's a no brainer. It happens to everyone. Liverpool - Coutinho, Spurs - Bale as prime examples of it happening at the top.

Whilst it's crap to lose good players, it's reflective of the great work we do as a club of producing and/or nurturing young talent. Crewe were well known in the 90s/00's as a conveyor belt of good young talent. I think the success of the likes of Wilson, Maddison etc shows that we're a club much in the same mold. Infact, without it, there's a decent chance we'd be in a much worse situation than we are now.

Selling players will always happen, but the Sam McCallum transfer and the timing is a strange one to me, first we have kept him until the end of the season so team wise nothing has changed, that’s ok. But there’s a chance, a good chance we could be playing Norwich next season I can’t understand why we didn’t hang on to him and if we were to sell him waited, his value could have increased there may have been other clubs interested. Some big names were linked, maybe paper talk perhaps.

Some of the players on the list above will also have forced a move through.

We are a selling club but it’s also nice to have players to sell rather than loans and dead legs that nobody else wants.

People keep going on about maybe being in the same division as Norwich but can they really not see the difference even if we are?

Robins has even said his agent told him in advance he would be getting McCallum a move.

£3.5m for a yet unproven League 1 full back is an excellent price
His back up was man of the match in around half of the games he played in at the beginning of the season

There are only a handful of clubs in the world who are not selling clubs. If you are at Leicester and Real Madrid come calling, then they would be a selling club

His agent obviously was working hard to get him a move whatever the situation

I would say it’s worse now in that there’s more of a requirement

Every year we are having to borrow off the owner master fund to balance defects and even with increased money at the Ricoh with higher attendances it was and will continue to an issue.
What I’m sure now is unique is our off field revenue is higher than on field match revenue
Promotion would require a radical re think as we would not survive

Norwich sign Maddison and then sell him for a profit and that's with a full stadium at every home game, not forgetting they get the parachute payments for three years.

It's the wages of players which is killing it for the smaller clubs.

Only way i could see it happening would be if we got a stake in the ricoh......Wasps don't wanna let us play there atm so can't see them selling a % of it

I get what you say Nick, but let’s take Norwich imo they will be relegated by Easter and the reason, they ain’t good enough, and perhaps their manager isn’t either, and if they are super strong we would only play them twice. I keep my eye on the championship and it’s a bit of a strange league there’s the likes of Preston, Brentford and Bristol City challenging and then there’s Stoke and Huddersfield at the wrong end, but then there’s last seasons top teams Luton and Barnsley likely to come down. I ain’t scared of promotion at all think our method of play is good and we are good at it, I know it was only one match but we had Blues all over the place last week we will need some better players, I think we might do ok.

They will also get a parachute payment and will then be a promotion contender the season after.

I know this parachute payment is a pain but as I say we only play them twice, I look at the mid championship teams and none frighten me, so long as we keep our back room staff we’ll be okay...i think

Preston have the lowest budget out of the three you mentioned and it’s still 5 times ours

Bristol City have a £30m budget

We are and always have been part of the football 'food chain'. Some just think we're higher than we really are.
When Man Utd sell ronaldo, Liverpool sell coutinho and spurs sell bale you can see that its not just us.

Preston have a budget that’s about 6 times ours. Even Millwall have about £14m
